"The Development of a Competency Profile for the Social Work Profession in Canada: History, Context, and Critique."

Since the Canadian Council of Social Work Regulators initiated a project to develop a Competency Profile for social work in Canada, we have been receiving multiple requests for information. The documents posted here provide some history and context to the concerns we have about this project. Also posted are documents from other Schools or organizations within Canada that share our concerns. If send any questions or comments about these documents to carolyn.campbell@dal.ca.

Field Education Developments in the FHP

The Field Education Coordinator at the School of Social Work, Cyndi Hall, with the support of the Practice Education Committee (PEC) of the Faculty of Health Professions (FHP), initiated a proposal to develop an online training program for preceptors in the Faculty of Health Professions. In collaboration with Deborah Kiceniuk, Associate Director for the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), a proposal was developed and submitted to seek funds through the Student Engagement Initiatives program. The project has been approved and a partnership between the PEC and the CLT has been formed to develop on-line preceptor training modules that reflect students’ perspectives of their community-based practice/clinical experiences with particular attention to preceptor training needs.

The Student Engagement Initative grants provide funding for development of education-based activities taht address student engagement. The funds are available for a 3-year period to develop a project that will be sustainable after the development phases are complete. The aim of this project is to develop an interprofessional comprehensive online preceptor training program that will be suited for a wide-variety of units in the Faculty of Health Professions. The School of Social Work will be the pilot site and offers both its degree programs by distance delivery. It is anticipated that these training modules will be suitable for campus-based placements as well as others located nationally and internationally.
