School of Social Work

students and professor

At the School of Social Work, Dalhousie University we believe that a commitment to social justice is the foundation of social work education and practice.

Social work is about helping individuals, families and communities to resolve personal and social difficulties, and promoting policy options which provide a better environment in which to live. This calls for skills based on a thorough knowledge of human development, cultural understanding, study of social institutions, and a personal capacity to assist others effectively.

Dalhousie’s social work programs embrace a critical and anti-oppressive approach to social work practice that includes an emphasis on social policy, professional values, theoretical perspectives, and practice methods. While the programs have evolved within the context of the people, communities and service network of the Maritime provinces, BSW and MSW graduates are qualified to practice social work throughout Canada and beyond.

Dalhousie's School of Social Work offers educational programs, research opportunities, and a school culture in keeping with these values.

Distance education

Dalhousie's School of Social Work offers both undergraduate and master's degrees by distance education.
